[She pauses to consider that, a jagged piece of rusted metal in her hand. If she were a crazy person, she'd use the metal to cut herself and see if she bled, if she felt anything. But she wasn't a crazy person, and she also didn't know if they had medical supplies that could thwart a tetanus infection.]

I don't believe that we are. I've imagined the afterlife to be many things, but this certainly wasn't one of the scenarios that ever ran through my head. Not that anyone can truly know what the afterlife is - if there is in fact one.

[She sets the jagged piece of metal down and considers the question for a moment longer.]

Do you mind if I ask why that scenario came to mind?
