First Annual Pod Day

WHO: Everyone
WHERE: Vault 66
WHEN: ???? - Day 1
WHAT: The first pods open
WARNINGS:TBD

AWAKENING

You awake laying on your back in an, admittedly comfortable, pod. You can't move anything but your eyes, can't even feel your body yet. How you got here or why is a blank. You may have been in the middle of your day, asleep, or even- for what you remember- should be dead. Then a screen directly in front of your face flickers to life and in crisp, black and white displays: DON'T PANIC. The following video then plays:

The screen flickers again and reads: CONGRATULATIONS ON PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE! WELCOME TO VAULT LIFE, CITIZEN. WELCOME TO YEAR: [ERROR]. YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS ARE LOCATED IN [FILE CORRUPTED. SEE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR]. ENJOY YOUR STAY AND THANK YOU FROM YOUR FRIENDS AT VAULT-TEC.

The pod then unseals and you are able to, unstably at first, climb out of the pod. Your body may feel foreign for a moment- perhaps entirely foreign if you suddenly find yourself a human, ghoul, or super mutant for the first time. But whatever your form, you have two items on: a bright blue jumpsuit with the number 66 in yellow on the back, and a mechanical device known as a Pip-boy sealed onto your arm. If you click on the buttons it takes you to an instruction screen.

You look around to find yourself in a room of other pods. Some are just opening, other people looking as confused as you climbing out. Others remain closed with the status of 'STASIS' on the screens attached to the pods. The rest of the room is less than impressive. Computer systems that seem out of place compared to the technology level of the pods are scattered across the room, apparently running the chambers. Trying to access them, even for the most talented hacker, will simply result in SEE OVERSEER being displayed. There is large metal door leading to the rest of the vault, a lever on the wall next to it that will cause it to open.

Welcome, dweller, to vault 66.

RAD ROACH RIOT

Outside of the pod room, the rest of the vault is limping along on an emergency power supply. The air is stale from lackluster recycling and deep shadows occupy the corners of rooms and edges of hallways as only the pale maintenance lighting flickers from the ceiling. The pip-boy flashlight helps, but can still only light up a small area, casting anything outside of it into even darker shadows.

In those shadows there is skittering. The noise isn't too noticeable when there are groups of people, but get down to one or two and it's impossible to ignore. Venture into an empty room and you’ll spot a small number, maybe even just one, loitering in what, until today, had more or less been their sole domain: radroaches. Giant, mutated cockroaches that have a hunger for fresh food (like say, new vault dwellers) when it’s available.

The majority of roaches, however, seem to have a destination in mind, mostly ignoring characters unless blocked or directly bothered. This hoard, gathering from all over the vault, all move through the shadows and vents to the kitchen. If a character is unthreatening enough, they can follow the trail unmolested by the creatures.

In the kitchen itself is a whole different matter. Even from down the hall, characters can hear a masculine, slightly French-accented voice exclaim:

“Mais! Get out, out you nasty things!”

After a moment, a burst of flame can be seen through the door, followed by the new yet distinctive sound of mandibles ripping at metal. Those that decide to enter will see over a dozen roaches trying to take down a lone, floating robot. Despite the robot occasionally hitting them with a blast of fire from a small flame-throwing on one of its arms, the roaches appear to be winning.

The source of the fight can be seen behind the robot: a counter full of various kinds of packaged foods, some of them newly opened. One roach has managed to make it to the prize, ripping into a things of what seems to be apples with its mandibles.

GENERAL EXPLORING

Whether you help with the Battle of the Kitchen or not, the rest of the vault awaits. This includes two other robots floating around the medical wing and water/air control systems, as well as more radroaches wandering around the many corpses/blood splatter patterns to be discovered and potentially cleaned up.

Chocolat had heard that there was a third Mr.Handy about somewhere but had never really seen it around. So it was with a bit of surprise that she happened to suddenly run across it when she made her way down to the rector level for the first time. She had initially come down here to search for anything that she could use as a weapon, but this was a pleasant surprise in it's own right.

"Why hello there," She started off polite, amiable even, in her tone. "And what might your name be?"

"Just because I'm following you doesn't mean I'm just going to do whatever you want. At least tell me what the hell this is about," She was still somewhat pissed about their previous encounter and couldn't understand what it was this jerkwad could possibly want with her at this point. "I would at least like to know if something is going to be a waste of my time or not before doing it."

[personal profile] cicadashell 2020-05-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He wants nothing to do with Chocolat specifically. She just happened to be there.

"It's not any more of a waste of time than fucking cleaning," he looks at her mop with disdain. "This place has at least 60 years of grime everywhere, why bother?"

Day 1 after rescuing Louis from the roaches

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
After discussing the problem of the rad roaches with Louis, Sandy decided it might do to find whoever Nick was.

It took some time since Sandy was nervous exploring on her own, but eventually she spotted another robot...it was a different one yes? And hoped this was her guy.

"Excuse me? I'm looking for Nick?"
justoutrunyou: (...whut?)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Wait...hold on you don't want to kill the giant gross bugs that want to steal all our food?"

That was utterly baffling to Sandy and the tone of voice made it clear she thought Jiro was out of his mind.

"Why? There's no way that's a good idea."
justoutrunyou: (watching you from high)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah...OK that makes sense."

Does it? She doesn't know how computers work. She's a modern girl sure but she's not about to start trying to fix Louis without guidence. When he says another word she doesn't understand she laughs."

"Peeshwank? I don't know what that means but if you mean Jiro? Yeah I don't like him either. He's a jerk and he shouldn't have been so rude to you."

The question has her look surprised, then a little sullen as she considers it.

"I guess...my parents...I have a lot of memories of my mom...less of my dad. But he used to tell me stories before bed about superheroes from before I was born. His favorite was Spider-man. He and Spider-man used to fight all the time, and sometimes they'd fight together. I remember he was warm and his voice was kinda gravelly but I liked it you know?"
justoutrunyou: (WTF?)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
"Y-yeah fine!" She waved a hand to try and ward off if Chocolat thought coming over to look at her might help. Rubbing her knee with the free hand she wiped tears from her eyes trying to pretend it hadn't happened.

"What are you doing in here? And like...you know...naked."

Well half naked but who's counting?
justoutrunyou: (dream a little dream socks)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I mean...a little? We didn't really get into chemistry but we did some science projects that were cool. I liked the physics stuff you know? Making containers to keep eggs from cracking if we dropped them. But mostly just...you know stupid stuff like art."

Her mother had encouraged her to take art classes but she was the only one. Even the art teacher tried to discourage anyone from assuming art was going to be a career path considering the strict censorship laws her city had put into place.

"I do like P.E. I'm the fastest girl in my grade." She added hoping that sounded less lame then she thought art sounded.

[personal profile] cicadashell 2020-05-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Jiro never really had any human friends, and he values animals above humans; even cockroaches. They just want to survive. Humans are assholes.

"They were here first."
justoutrunyou: (it's never lupas)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Were they though? I mean that movie that played for the pods kinda makes it seems like the humans were here first. I mean we don't know how long like...we have been here but that's not the point."

Every time she thinks about how long she might have been in that pod in makes her stomach knot up.

"Anyway those things are probably like...dripping disease."

[personal profile] cicadashell 2020-05-16 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I didn't means humans in general, you idiot! How long we've been here is exactly the point!"

In contrast, he doesn't think about the pod existing as stasis. It doesn't make sense with the video, which is clearly from a time long before he was even born.

"You're probably diseased too."
102sweetdreams: (don't like what i'm hearing)

[personal profile] 102sweetdreams 2020-05-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, nonsense." Peggy shifted her focus to Sandy, watching the girl play with the car for a moment. Though she seemed too young to be here on her own, she knew full well what young women at that age were capable of. She knew what she had been capable of, as well as what the girls at that Soviet facility were capable of. She'd even learned of Whitney Frost's past, and she knew that there was more power in Sandy than perhaps even she knew. But she also knew how well people could beat that power and that light out of you. The possibility that Sandy had been told early on - and possibly with an awful sort of regularity - that something she loved was stupid was enough to raise Peggy's hackles. "There's nothing stupid about art. I admit there's something stupid about men having private art collections that they don't share with the public, but art itself is a wonderful thing, both for the artist and the audience, for any number of reasons. If you're lucky enough to find art supplies down here, I suggest you hold on to them. They may prove a good outlet for anything you're going through."

She gave Sandy a firm nod, adding, "And the running may well keep you alive down here, which is no mean thing. I once overheard someone say that when you're faced with an opponent, and there's nothing you can do but run, then run until you're at a place where you've either lost your opponent, or you can make the fight yours." Granted, Peggy had never really heeded that advice, being the sort of person who went straight for the eye of a hurricane.
102sweetdreams: (explain)

[personal profile] 102sweetdreams 2020-05-16 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
My lover. How thoroughly modern. Peggy looked the woman up and down - not so as to judge her, but just to get a feel for who this woman was, what she was like.

"Perhaps that's for the best," Peggy finally said. "I'm not certain this is the sort of place a pet would fare well in." Not that Peggy knew much beyond what that questionable video in the pod had shown her, but a vault without access to sunlight seemed bad enough for humans, never mind one's furred or feathered friend.

"As far as I can tell, a vault, some sort of bunker to protect people from nuclear war, though more and more I'm gathering the fact that no one who has awoken remembers how they got here." She gives Chocolat a sympathetic nod. "I was with my -" What was Daniel Sousa, exactly, to Peggy? They'd only just kissed so calling him a lover felt patently ridiculous, but he wasn't a boyfriend or a paramour either. She could have called him a beau but using that word felt absurd on a number of levels - she was no ditzy Fifth Avenue debutante, after all. "The last thing I remember is being with a friend of the male variety myself, before waking up here."
justoutrunyou: (No longer hideing)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Wait...what are you talking about? Do you just mean us the six of us?" She shook her head "Anyway I am NOT diseased. And even if I wasn't I'm not about to bite you or your food and spread it."

"Come on, how are you gonna keep them anyway? It's not like we have a bunch of glass cages to keep them safe and secure."
102sweetdreams: (side-eyes)

[personal profile] 102sweetdreams 2020-05-16 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
[That question gives Peggy pause. She's seen plenty of blood splatters, yes. She's already heard of the human skeletons, and that's certainly worth investigating further. But beyond the roaches, she hasn't heard or seen anything else. Not even a rat, which seemed to be all kinds of suspicious now that Jiro had brought it up.]

They've always joked that the cockroach will be the only thing to survive the apocalypse. I wonder if that may not have been as much of a joke. Something else to ask this mysterious Overseer about whenever we're confronted with whomever they are.

[She's silent for a long moment as she rummage through yet another footlocker. This one produces more nonsense, but also something possibly useful - a belt.]

I suppose radiation and nuclear fallout would explain why they're the size of human infants, wouldn't it?

[She adds the belt to the pile of weaponry that they're gathering.]

To whip a roach and smash it, or perhaps...well, who knows. It could prove useful.
justoutrunyou: (look to the sky)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sandy listened, at first not meeting Peggy's gaze but the more she talked the more confident Sandy felt. Art wasn't important to the adults back home but...it was still something that made her happy. Maybe that was important enough.

Either way Peggy was not stupid, and if she didn't think art was stupid then maybe that was just another lie Sandy had been told.

"OK...yeah. Maybe I can paint something to make this place look less sad and gross." She agreed though she wasn't sure if she even could.

As for the running thing she smiled at Peggy's advice "My dad always used to tell a joke about running. You never have to outrun the bear...you just gotta outrun whoever else the bear is chasing." After a moment she added "I think yours sounds cooler though."

[personal profile] cicadashell 2020-05-16 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course I did!"

Even in Sandy's scenario, Jiro's pretty sure cockroaches existed before humans.

"I'll find something and leave them in a room we're not using."
justoutrunyou: (new toys?)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sandy laughed "No no I mean...yeah that would be scary as heck. But like Spider-man was just a guy who had spider powers. like climbing walls, shooting webs...telling bad jokes."

Was that a super power? It apparently was really useful according her dad.

"There were lots of heroes. Iron Man, Captain America, Dr. Strange. Dad didn't fight all of them but he knew lots of stories."

[personal profile] cicadashell 2020-05-16 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods; the apocalypse adage is what he'd been thinking too.]

I don't know much about that kind of shit, but looks that way.

[He hasn't had much of an education to speculate anything too scientific about radiation levels. Peggy's belt find has Jiro going back through his own footlocker to remove shoelaces and gather any ties or the like as well to add to the pile.]

Guess we don't really know what'll be useful.

[The bunk of 'weapons' is starting to look like a pile of junk.]

Should we organize things?
justoutrunyou: (Ho shit time to run!)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh uh...sorry. Sandy. Sandy Marko. And Louis told me you might be able to tell me about the roaches?"
justoutrunyou: (Default)

[personal profile] justoutrunyou 2020-05-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Alright fine." This sounded so stupid and the frustration in Sandy's voice reflected it. "No killing them unless it's like...self defense. But we've really gotta make sure they're locked down I mean...if it's important to you we can keep them safe but I don't understand it."

But even if the idea of touching them, or filling a room with them makes her stomach churn she's willing to try and meet him halfway.
